Echinacea, commonly known as purple cornflower, has been in use medicinally for centuries. Echinacea is most often used to boost the immune system, especially during seasonal change.
Goldenseal is often combined with Echinacea and has also been traditionally used to boost the immune system and promote digestive tract health. Its power comes from hydrastine, berberine and canadine alkaloids.
Current research indicated that Echinacea stimulates the body's natrural resistance to foreign bacteria by enhancing immune system cells called phagocytes and leucocytes (white blood cells), and stimulates cytokine production (immuno transmitters). Goldenseal contains very powerful antimicrobial, anti-parasitic and anti-viral agents. These compounds are known as allkaloids. The most effective of the Goldenseal alkaloids are hydrastine and berberine. Berberine has shown to kill a wide range of germ causing yeast infections and parasites. It may also activate white blood cells, making them more effective at fighting infection.
